Kappa Theta Epsilon, the National Co-op and Internship Honor Society, held its 13th Annual Induction Ceremony on Friday, April 3, 2009. Students who were inducted must be in the upper fifth of the co-op or internship class in their academic major, have received excellent employer evaluations, be approved by the co-op or internship faculty and the director of cooperative education and her assistant. Patrick Becker (center), Criminal Justice major is pictured above with his parents, Mary Becker, Director of Alpha House and Jerry Becker, one of our cooperating employers (who supervises our Finance interns at Smith-Barney). Patrick interned at the Philadelphia District Attorney's Office during the fall semester and the New Jersey Division of Criminal Justice in the spring semester. Patrick's options following graduation look especially bright!
David Kellstrom, Criminal Justice major and graduate of Holy Family University, is seen here with his internship supervisor during his experience at the Maryland Department of Juvenile Services. Following graduation, David was hired as a result of his internship and is currently working at the same site as a Case Management Specialist. As we always tell our student applicants: "Co-op Works!"

To support your classroom learning, Holy Family University offers Cooperative Education and Internship Opportunities. These programs are structured and supervised on-the-job learning experiences that qualify for college credit.

From Comcast Corporation to Walt Disney World in Florida, nearly 600 employers have partnered with the Co-op Department at Holy Family University. The results speak for themselves: After graduation, 90 percent of co-op students either are hired full time by their co-op employers or find positions within the same field.

For more information please contact the Director of Cooperative Education: Sister M. Frances Veitz, CSFN, EdD at mfveitz@holyfamily.edu.

The Cooperative Education Program is a structured learning experience whereby a student applies concepts learned in a classroom to the realities of an on-the-job situation. Co-op positions are usually paid and academic credit is awarded since both cooperating employers as well as faculty members play an integral role in the program. Internships are also available.

Three programs are available for both full- and part-time juniors and seniors:

  • Alternating: the student alternates full-time work periods with periods of full-time study
  • Parallel: the student attends classes full- or part-time while working part-time
  • Job Enrichment: for the student who is already working for an employer willing to assign him or her temporarily to a new department or to a special project.

Prior to actual placement, the co-op or internship applicant must fulfill three pre-requisites: a resume prepared according to co-op/internship directives and approved by the Co-op Department; attendance at an Interviewing Workshop given by the Career Services Department; and Learning Objectives reviewed by and signed off on by a faculty member of the applicant's choice. Ideally, sophomore year is the best time to make an appointment to apply for co-op or internship placement; freshmen are also encouraged to apply early. A student must have junior or senior status to be placed in a co-op or internship position related to his/her academic major.
