Administrative Assistant
Melissa Hipwell
Student at Holy Family University
I graduated from Calvary Christian Academy in 2006, where I was Student Government President and Salutatorian of my class. When I started at Holy Family, I majored in Elementary and Special Education and was an English peer tutor at the CAE. However, my interests changed, as is the case with many college students! I now enjoy majoring in Psychology and Business and working as the Administrative Assistant at the CAE. As the Assistant, I am active not only in the recruiting and training of new tutors but also in all the operational phases of the Center. I, aside from the CAE, am actively involved at my church as well as in several clubs on campus. If you come in the Center, you just may find me running around at high speed!
Meet Our Peer Tutors
Katie Anderson
Hello. I graduated from Bishop Eustace Preparatory School in 2003, attained my Bachelor’s degree from Marywood University in 2007, and am currently pursuing my Master’s in Education here at Holy Family University. Reading and writing have always been my hobbies, and, therefore, I applied for a position at the Center for Academic Enhancement as an English Peer Tutor. I realize how daunting the thought of writing a paper can be at times; please don’t hesitate to visit the Center for Academic Enhancement on the second floor of the library for assistance!!
Katie Blumenstock
I graduated from Bensalem High School in 2008 and am currently majoring in Secondary Education for Mathematics. I was one of the lucky ones who found Math very easy. During grade school and high school, I was always the person my friends came to when they need help with Math. My goal as a tutor at the CAE, and eventually as a teacher, is to allow my students or tutees to understand topics they thought they never could. As well as tutoring at the CAE, I am also the Vice President of the Pigers, which is Holy Family’s Math Club, a 1st year mentor, and an active member of the Alternative Spring Break Trip. Out side of school, I am also involved in my community by volunteering as the coach for the Bucks County Bears 5 and 6 year old cheerleading team.
Amy Chu-Fong
My name is Amy Chu-Fong. I
am also known as “Chu-Wii” around
Holy Family University. I attended Mount Saint Dominic Academy
in Caldwell, NJ. I am currently majoring in Nursing, and I do
a lot of extracurricular activities such as Holy Family Music
Ministry, Drama Club, Tri-Lite (newspaper), photography
for Familogue (yearbook), and Hour of Power Experience.
I admit that whenever I hear someone talk about Spanish, I ask
(in a perky way) if he or she needs help. I have helped people
in Spanish but never officially worked as a Spanish tutor until
this semester. One of the philosophies I use for Spanish is acting.
Sometimes, we need to use our last resort, which is imagination.
It does sound kiddy, but it does work. For example, I imagine
myself talking to Salma Hayek, Penelope Cruz, Catherine Zeta-Jones,
Antonio Banderas, Javier Bardem, etc. I even imagine that I am
one of the actresses… or actors. With the help of imagination,
you can begin to act it out. I understand it sounds crazy, but
sometimes, everyone has a day to act goofy. If you need any help,
just find me at the Center for Academic Enhancement or around
Holy Family University. I am willing to help you out!
Calum Colton
I graduated from New Hope-Solebury High School in 2008. My major
is Secondary Education/Math. I enjoy peer tutoring because, as
a prospective teacher, this is essentially what I plan on doing
for my career. I’m in Holy Family University's math club, The πgers. I am also a Student Ambassador for the college. People tend to think that math is excessively difficult to do, but in reality it’s not. If you are having any trouble at all in math or any other subject, don’t
hesitate to come to the Center for Academic Enhancement for some
extra help.
Aimee Drabyn
My name is Aimee Drabyn, and I attended Avon High School in Avon, Indiana. I graduated in 2007, and I am currently majoring in Elementary Education with a minor in Communications. I play volleyball for the University and am secretary for SAAC (Student Athlete Advisory Committee). I also am a member of National SAAC where I represent our CACC conference at the NCAA level for athletics. I tutor math for the CAE, and I enjoy helping students reach their potential at the academic level. It is extremely rewarding when students understand the material you are helping them with -- tutoring
is giving me an opportunity to work on my teaching skills for my future profession!
William Kane
I graduated from Archbishop Ryan High School in 2009, and
I am currently a Mathematics/ Secondary Education major. I've been gifted with a number
of very exceptional math teachers over the years and feel that I am rather
talented in the field of mathematics. I've always also been intrigued
by English language and literature, and so I tutor in both areas, although
math is my primary discipline. Education is integral to my studies and
career goals, and so I consider tutoring to be my first step on the path to
becoming a teacher. Outside of academics, I am a member of an up-and-coming
acoustic rock band. Please, do not hesitate to get in touch with me if
you need help; I am always willing to lend a hand, even if it's off the clock!

As a foreign student, majoring in Biochemistry, I know exactly
what it is like to learn English the hard way. It is not only the mechanics
of a language one has to get a good grip of, but also the "language habits," i.e.
specific expressions, ways of saying things, jokes, arguments. It is
vital for the language learning process that it be active and powered
by one's curiosity to gain direct access to new information, culture,
literature, every day life and, most importantly perhaps, new people
with whom to communicate. I hope I can instill this attitude in my
ESL students and be of use in their learning process. Welcome to a
whole new world!
Marek Kowalski
I came to Holy Family as an international student from Kielce,
a small city in Poland. I am majoring in Biochemistry. During
the first semester of my freshman year, I started working in
the Center for Academic Enhancement as an English as a Second
Language (ESL) Peer Tutor. We have enhanced the ESL tutoring program in order to help students of different native languages feel comfortable in and increase proficiency in the challenges of the University’s
academic curriculum. It seems like it must be working since I
still have the job! Even if you are a fluent English speaker
and writer, and all you need is to discuss some typical issues
of a foreign student, you are truly invited.
Brittany La Couture
I graduated from DePaul Catholic High school in New Jersey where
I was a "Vincentian Scholar," meaning I carried at
least 5 honors or AP classes in any given semester, and maintained
at least an A- average. I am now a sophomore at Holy Family;
however, I plan to graduate early. I am a Psychology major, and
I am working toward a minor in philosophy, which I hope will
help me to achieve my goal of going to law school. I am also
a member of the volleyball team, SAAC, and a Student Ambassador.
I am really excited to be able to work with other students, to
discuss topics in philosophy and psychology, and to work toward
building a better understanding of these subjects for my peers
and myself. Psychology is a social science and philosophy is
a humanity- and really what better way is there to learn a social
science or a humanity than through interacting and developing
ideas with other people?
Andrea Mantilla
I was born and raised in Esmeraldas, a small city in Ecuador. I moved to Philadelphia
four years ago, I graduated from Philadelphia Academy Charter High School (PACHS)
in 2007. I want to become a veterinarian, so I am studying Biology. I have two
minors: Chemistry and Spanish. I decided to become a tutor because I want
to help students in the understanding of this complex science. I am also
a Resident Advisor; I work with Fusion, the Albertans, theTigers, and the Ambassadors. Feel
free to stop by the CAE; we are here to help!
Heather McGuire
I am a 2007 graduate from Central Bucks West High School. I am a
Marketing and Management major, with an interest in opening my own business
someday. At the Center for Academic Enhancement I tutor English. I enjoy
tutoring this subject along with reading books from some of my favorite authors,
including Jane Austen and Nora Roberts. Along with being a peer tutor I am
also a Student Fellow for the CAE. I enjoy helping students who may struggle
with certain aspects of reading comprehension or writing. My hope at the
CAE is to help students improve their reading and writing skills and to open
their eyes to the many interesting sides of reading. I hope that students
will walk away with new understandings and become just as interested in English
as I am!
Jenna Pawlowsky
¡Hola!
¿Quieres hablar español?
My name is Jenna Pawlowsky, and I am a Spanish tutor
at the CAE. I graduated from The Philadelphia Academy Charter High School in
2009 and am currently a student here at Holy Family University. My major is
Nursing, and I am also taking a minor in Spanish. I decided to become a Spanish
tutor in order to help others who may be struggling with the language, or who
simply just want to practice it. So, ¡Vamos!
Anahita Shahabi
It might be very interesting to other students to know that I graduated from
high school in 1998, very long time ago, from overseas. Currently, I
am a Biochemistry major at Holy Family University. However,
I plan to change my major to Bio Med Tech; I will do this to focus more specifically
on my career goals. I have a GPA of 4.0, and I realize that it is never
too late to study, to explore and achieve the goal of pursuing higher
education. I was nominated by my instructor in Bio 120 to be a member of the Center
for Academic Enhancement. I tutor Biology, and I am actively involved
in Albertan's Club, which is the University's science club. I enjoy
peer tutoring because I know this journey will help me learn even more, perhaps
from other students: we can help each other in order to succeed. Please do
not hesitate to visit the Center for Academic Enhancement, located on the second
floor of the library, for some extra help. Have a wonderful semester.
Jamie Wright
I graduated from Pennsbury High school in 2009- home of the best prom in America!
Some of my fondest High School memories include being Overall Sports Nite
Captain, Varsity Girls Bowling Captain, and of course, Prom!! I am currently
a Nursing major at Holy Family. Along with working as a Spanish tutor at
the Center for Academic Enhancement, I am a student ambassador for the Admissions
Office. As a Spanish tutor, I understand learning a new language is challenging-
it is for everybody! Learning Spanish (or any language) has endless benefits
that can help your career and personal development. After traveling to Costa
Rica in the summer of 2008, I realized how rewarding and satisfying it is
to communicate effectively with native Spanish speakers! Please don’t
hesitate to come to the CAE, even if you have one question! Transitioning
into college studies can be tough, but we’re here to help!
