Administrative Assistant
Melissa Hipwell
Student at Holy Family University
I graduated from Calvary Christian Academy in 2006, where I was Student Government President and Salutatorian of my class. When I started at Holy Family, I majored in Elementary and Special Education and was an English peer tutor at the CAE. However, my interests changed, as is the case with many college students! I now enjoy majoring in Psychology and Business and working as the Administrative Assistant at the CAE. As the Assistant, I am active not only in the recruiting and training of new tutors but also in all the operational phases of the Center. I, aside from the CAE, am actively involved at my church as well as in several clubs on campus. If you come in the Center, you just may find me running around at high speed!
Meet Our Peer Tutors
Katie Anderson
Hello. I graduated from Bishop Eustace Preparatory School in 2003, attained my Bachelor’s degree from Marywood University in 2007, and am currently pursuing my Master’s in Education here at Holy Family University. Reading and writing have always been my hobbies, and, therefore, I applied for a position at the Center for Academic Enhancement as an English Peer Tutor. I realize how daunting the thought of writing a paper can be at times; please don’t hesitate to visit the Center for Academic Enhancement on the second floor of the library for assistance!!
Katie Blumenstock
I graduated from Bensalem High School in 2008 and am currently majoring in Secondary Education for Mathematics. I was one of the lucky ones who found Math very easy. During grade school and high school, I was always the person my friends came to when they need help with Math. My goal as a tutor at the CAE, and eventually as a teacher, is to allow my students or tutees to understand topics they thought they never could. As well as tutoring at the CAE, I am also the Vice President of the Pigers, which is Holy Family’s Math Club, a 1st year mentor, and an active member of the Alternative Spring Break Trip. Out side of school, I am also involved in my community by volunteering as the coach for the Bucks County Bears 5 and 6 year old cheerleading team.
Sara Cashin
I am a 2006 Neshaminy High School graduate. I am majoring in English Literature with a minor in Spanish, which is my primary interest. At the Center for Academic Enhancement, I tutor Spanish. I have had the pleasure of interacting with native speakers of the Spanish language through Holy Family, as well as the St. Mary Parenting Resource Center. On campus, I am actively involved in Fusion, which is the University’s multicultural club. Contributing to Tri-Lite, the school’s newspaper, in both Spanish and English columns, has enabled me to develop a deeper appreciation for, and understanding of, language. Realizing that learning a foreign language can be a difficult and frustrating task, my goal is to provide support and assistance to students of all skill levels. Please do not hesitate to visit me on the second floor of the Library. No question is insignificant! Everyone is respected and welcome.

I graduated from New Hope-Solebury High School in 2008. My major is Secondary Education/Math. I enjoy peer tutoring because, as a prospective teacher, this is essentially what I plan on doing for my career. I’m in Holy Family University's math club, The πgers. I am also a Student Ambassador for the college. People tend to think that math is excessively difficult to do, but in reality it’s not. If you are having any trouble at all in math or any other subject, don’t hesitate to come to the Center for Academic Enhancement for some extra help.
Aimee Drabyn
My name is Aimee Drabyn, and I attended Avon High School in Avon, Indiana. I graduated in 2007, and I am currently majoring in Elementary Education with a minor in Communications. I play volleyball for the University and am secretary for SAAC (Student Athlete Advisory Committee). I also am a member of National SAAC where I represent our CACC conference at the NCAA level for athletics. I tutor math for the CAE, and I enjoy helping students reach their potential at the academic level. It is extremely rewarding when students understand the material you are helping them with -- tutoring is giving me an opportunity to work on my teaching skills for my future profession!

As a foreign student, majoring in Biochemistry, I know exactly what it is like to learn English the hard way. It is not only the mechanics of a language one has to get a good grip of, but also the "language habits," i.e. specific expressions, ways of saying things, jokes, arguments. It is vital for the language learning process that it be active and powered by one's curiosity to gain direct access to new information, culture, literature, every day life and, most importantly perhaps, new people with whom to communicate. I hope I can instill this attitude in my ESL students and be of use in their learning process. Welcome to a whole new world!
Marek Kowalski
I came to Holy Family as an international student from Kielce, a small city in Poland. I am majoring in Biochemistry. During the first semester of my freshman year, I started working in the Center for Academic Enhancement as an English as a Second Language (ESL) Peer Tutor. We have enhanced the ESL tutoring program in order to help students of different native languages feel comfortable in and increase proficiency in the challenges of the University’s academic curriculum. It seems like it must be working since I still have the job! Even if you are a fluent English speaker and writer, and all you need is to discuss some typical issues of a foreign student, you are truly invited.
Brittany La Couture
I graduated from DePaul Catholic High school in New Jersey where I was a "Vincentian Scholar," meaning I carried at least 5 honors or AP classes in any given semester, and maintained at least an A- average. I am now a sophomore at Holy Family; however, I plan to graduate early. I am a Psychology major, and I am working toward a minor in philosophy, which I hope will help me to achieve my goal of going to law school. I am also a member of the volleyball team, SAAC, and a Student Ambassador. I am really excited to be able to work with other students, to discuss topics in philosophy and psychology, and to work toward building a better understanding of these subjects for my peers and myself. Psychology is a social science and philosophy is a humanity- and really what better way is there to learn a social science or a humanity than through interacting and developing ideas with other people?
Heather McGuire
I am a 2007 graduate from Central Bucks West High School. I am a Marketing and Management major, with an interest in opening my own business someday. At the Center for Academic Enhancement I tutor English. I enjoy tutoring this subject along with reading books from some of my favorite authors, including Jane Austen and Nora Roberts. Along with being a peer tutor I am also a Student Fellow for the CAE. I enjoy helping students who may struggle with certain aspects of reading comprehension or writing. My hope at the CAE is to help students improve their reading and writing skills and to open their eyes to the many interesting sides of reading. I hope that students will walk away with new understandings and become just as interested in English as I am!
