Holy Family students enrolled in “HIST 316/451: American Foreign Policy” traveled by train to the United Nations in New York City for a tour on Friday, Oct. 25. The students who participated in the trip were Jelle Bing, Michael Birkhimer, Allison Gagne, Michael Rubino, Rianna Shields, and Dylan Weir. The excursion was organized by Dr. Mary Carroll Johansen, professor of history, and Prince Adnan El Hashemite, executive director for Global Initiatives

Prince Adnan provided lunch for the students and gave them a tour of the sculptures on the grounds of the United Nations, including “Nonviolence,” and the “Ark of Return,” a monument honoring people who were victims of the Transatlantic slave trade. Inside the United Nations, a professional tour guide brought the students into the rooms where the Security Council, General Assembly, and U.N. committees meet when the U.N. is in session. The students also viewed additional works of art and exhibits. Throughout the tour, they experienced the vibrant, international atmosphere, hearing conversations in multiple languages and seeing visitors in native dress and military uniforms from various nations.

During their journey to and from Penn Station, the students passed several notable landmarks, including the Kuwaiti Consulate, the Turkish Embassy, and the United States Mission to the U.N. They also enjoyed views of iconic New York City sites such as the Empire State Building, Chrysler Building, Grand Central Station, the New York Public Library, and the Pepsi sign along the Brooklyn waterfront.
