Students on Study Abroad Trip to Cuba

Spanish, Minor

The minor in Spanish is a wonderful complement for students across every major and field as they will acquire proficiency in the language, understanding the richness of its culture, and knowledge of the countries in which the language is spoken.

What Can I Do with this Minor?

The Spanish minor will help students develop and perfect the four language skills: speaking, listening comprehension, reading, and writing. It will also expand their knowledge of Spanish and Spanish American history, culture, civilization, and literature. Regardless of the courses chosen, students will become well acquainted with the historical and contemporary lives of Hispanics in the U.S. and will gain a valuable advantage in the workplace.

The growing population of Hispanics in the U.S. makes the ability to speak, understand, read, and write Spanish more of a necessity. The Spanish minor can enhance the chances of obtaining employment in careers where knowing Spanish is a must as well as where knowing Spanish becomes a unique advantage. Spanish fluency makes job applicants more desirable as they can communicate with a wider group of consumers and clients in a growing global economy.

A Spanish minor and the language and cultural skills you acquire will allow you to work more effectively with Spanish speakers in different situations. Students will also acquire a cultural sensibility that will make interactions with the target population smooth and productive.

This minor will be especially helpful to those majoring in fields related to healthcare, education, business, social services, and law enforcement where bilingual skills will prove vital in reaching all constituents effectively.
